SPRAGGA BENZ SON KILLING, TRIAL BEGAN TODAY





The trial of the two policemen charged with the murder of of the son of dancehall artiste Spragga Benz began in the Home Circuit Court this week. Three witnesses have so far testified at the in camera trial.

Constables Audley Lawrence and André Hare are charged with the murder of 17-year-old Carlton Grant Jr. They are on bail in the sum of $300,000 each, with sureties.

The Crown represented by Meridian Kholer, deputy director of public prosecutions, is alleging at the trial which began on Monday before the 12-member jury, that Grant was unarmed when he was fatally shot on August 23, 2008.

It is alleged that on the day of the incident Grant and another young man were riding a bicycle, downtown Kingston, when they were stopped by the police. The young men were told to run and while running, the police allegedly fired shots at them. Grant was fatally shot.

Police reports were that Grant and another man were riding a bicycle along Church Street, downtown Kingston, when the police stopped them. The police said Grant pulled a gun and fired at them and they returned the fire.

The policemen are being represented by attorneys-at-law Valerie Neita-Robertson and Carolyn Reid-Cameron.

Supreme Court judge Horace Marsh is presiding at the trial.
