Jamaican sprinter and world record holder Usain Bolt claimed the 100 metres while fellow compatriot, Asafa Powell placed second at the star-studded Golden Gala in Rome today.

Powell, who had a good start clocked 9.93 seconds, while Bolt who got off to a slow start, pulled from behind until he was in front, clocking in at 9.91 seconds.

Two other Jamaicans, Mario Forythe placed seventh in 10.21 seconds while Lerone Clarke placed eighth in 10.31.

The triple Olympic and world champion had not competed since he was beaten by Tyson Gay in Stockholm last August, and had to cut his season short because of problems with his back and Achilles' tendon.

Bolt has now beaten Powell in nine of their 10 meets.

Powell's only win was in Stockholm in 2008.
